Fishing is more than just a job—it’s a way of life, a connection to nature, and a responsibility to the future. For me, it all started on a beach in Costa Rica.
How It All Began
I was living in Costa Rica when I met a man named Mark Roth at the beach. He was looking for a crew member to seine for salmon in Alaska, and I took the opportunity. That decision led to eight incredible years of working with Mark until he retired. When he did, I bought his permit and boats, continuing the tradition of harvesting wild Alaskan salmon.
What I Love About Fishing in Alaska
It’s hard to pick just one thing. The wild scenery is breathtaking, and there’s something deeply fulfilling about pulling up pure, unadulterated superfood from the ocean. Wild salmon is one of the healthiest proteins out there, and being part of the process that brings it to people’s tables is rewarding in ways I never expected.
Why I Work with Kenai-Red
I chose to work with Kenai-Red because they stand for something beyond just selling fish. They’re a family-owned business that treats their fishermen fairly, ensuring that we get a good price for high-quality seafood. It’s not just business—it’s a partnership built on integrity and respect.
What You Should Know About Buying Seafood
Every time you buy seafood, you’re casting a vote for how it’s caught and distributed. Wild and sustainable fishing practices should matter to consumers. These days, every type of fishing is marketed as "sustainable," but history tells a different story. Mid and bottom water trawling for pollock, for example, depletes fish populations and damages marine ecosystems. If we want future generations to enjoy seafood, we have to be mindful of how it’s harvested today.
A Little Fishing Humor
Of course, no fishing story is complete without a joke!
Why do seagulls fly over the sea?
Because if they flew over the bay, they’d be called Bagels.
Fishing is more than just catching fish—it's about stewardship, tradition, and community. I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to do what I love and to share the bounty of the ocean with others.
